Erbil (aka Irbil) is the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The area is bordered by two major rivers, the upper Zab River in the North West and the lower Zab River in the southeast side. It will be just as dangerous for the Pope to travel to as Baghdad, perhaps more so now.

US 'outraged' By Rocket Attack On Erbil, Vows To 'hold Accountable Those Responsible'

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on February 15 called for an investigation into a rocket attack on an airbase in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and promised to “hold accountable those responsible”. According to BBC, Blinken said that the United States is “outraged” by the rocket attack in the Kurdistan region.

Rocket attacks in Erbil represent latest challenge to Pope’s Iraq trip

With less than three weeks to go until Pope Francis’ first international trip in 18 months, rockets were fired Monday at the airport and civilian areas of Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan and a city he’s scheduled to visit during his March 5-8 outing to Iraq.
